A hard rubbish truck caught on fire today in the suburban streets of Werribee, filling the air with thick smoke. The incident occurred on St. Andrews Drive at approximately 1.30 pm today.
The waste company turned up at a resident’s address and picked up the hard rubbish from the customer, then noticed that the contents of the truck was on fire. The driver quickly ran to a hose that was on the front lawn of the customers property but it was too short to reach the truck.
The truck had to be reversed to reach the hose but the hose was no match for the fire. The customer quickly called the CFA to attend the incident. The street was blocked off from both ends of the incident and some of the contents of the truck were removed to extinguish the fire.
During the clean up the waste company discovered a discarded car battery had been put in the waste and is believed to have caused the fire. See here for Wyndham City Councils guide to waste.
